Clear Cutting and Ethical Environmental Issues Essays
Clear Cutting and Ethical Environmental Issues Essays Clear Cutting and Ethical Environmental Issues Essay Clear Cutting and Ethical Environmental Issues Essay There was no specific logging, Just chop everything down and send it to the saw factories. Because of this indiscreet practice disintegration was made and plants were not, at this point ready to develop in the dirt. Mud washed down Into new water streams that was utilized for washing, drinking, and cooking and tainted the water from the abundance sediment stores that are abandoned. Regularly recently planted trees are not permitted to develop before they are collected. A few organizations just hold up twenty years before clear cutting a similar territory as in the past. This makes an issue as the trees are not allowed to develop. It is presence of mind that if these organizations would hold up another couple decades they uproarious get a greater gather from the trees and they would not need to chop the same number of trees down. At whatever point logging organizations decide to utilize similar sorts of trees to supplant what they have chopped down they risked the whole new backwoods getting loaded with illness and bugs that flourish off of the kinds of trees that have been planted. At the point when the ailments begin to show up it doesn't take some time before the entirety of the recently planted trees become wiped out and kick the bucket. Presently the land gets unusable to the logging organizations so they Just surrender It. Not all nations replant what they cut, ND Costa Rica Is a Prime case of this. In Costa Rica the laws of clear cutting are permissive and logging organizations exploit this reality. In Costa Rica, until just around 15 years prior, you could make sure about free land by Improving it. The least demanding approach to improve the land was to cleave down the backwoods. The woodland was viewed as squandered or unused land. Truth be told, Costa Rica needed to pass laws to keep vagrants from reserving the option to assume control over land that was being dispensed for reforestation, since it appeared to them to be dismissed. (Reverberation World 2009) Logging organizations in Costa Rica re known for clearing a huge zone so as to get to a limited quantity of trees that are beneficial, while the unrewarding trees are left there to decay. American logging organizations are not blameless either. There has been some inquiry to their morals with regards to ensuring imperiled species. In 1986, a stressed tree hugger bunch requested of the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service to list the owl as a jeopardized species, a move that would ban the lumber Industry from clearing these terrains. In June 1990, following quite a while of warmed exchange and case between he government, earthy people, and the lumber business, the northern spotted owl was more clear a participant animal varieties. Uninformed tens drags out, baby organizations are required to leave at any rate 40% of the old-development timberlands flawless inside a 1. 3 mile range of any spotted owl home or movement site, an arrangement that is eagerly contradicted by the lumber business. Industry agents guarantee that the measure will leave a great many Northwest lumberjacks and plant laborers Jobless, and demand that such protectionist approaches negligently neglect to consider the desperate monetary results of safeguarding. Earthy people, then again, contend that society has a key commitment to protect this uncommon species and the wild it occupies (Andre Velasquez 1991) However with the entirety of the pessimistic press that the logging business gets, there are some constructive perspectives to clear cutting. Logging occupations pay well overall and can spring new life into a region that has endured financially. At the point when a logging activity sets up in a town it may not continually carry new openings to the zone, however it brings in new cash for the region. The lumberjacks need a spot to remain at café and stores to get food from, and essential necessities are deed also. Sadly a few spots of business may become unscrupulous when a logging organization goes to their town. They may bring costs up in request to make a bigger benefit from the lumberjacks, the town may loosen up a portion of the laws to suit the lumberjacks, and a case of this would be a dry town presently offers liquor to suit the lumberjacks. Another positive part of clear cutting is called woods the executives. By permitting logging organizations to obvious certain territories of timberland, new development from seedlings that have attempted to develop yet couldn't currently can in light of the fact that the woods nappy is presently opened and light can sparkle down to the backwoods floor. This can permit certain types of trees and bushes that were setting out toward elimination to flourish as they currently can get the daylight and water that they so urgently required, yet were denied because of the woods substantial covering. The eventual fate of clear slicing is by all accounts disheartening. While clear cutting is the least expensive and quickest approach to slice lumber it seems, by all accounts, to be going out with woods the board supplanting it. Apparently the act of clear cutting accomplishes more mischief than it does great. There is some uplifting news for the valid however, and that comes through training trees. Much the same as corn has been tamed to address certain issue, so will trees. As indicated by Jennifer Actuator (2009), researchers are chipping away at quality control to develop trees that can become quicker and greater for explicit purposes, for example, making furniture or pressed wood, and have the option to develop trees a lot of like a yield is developed for increasingly productive utilization of restricted land space. While there are clear disservices to clear cutting, it has made some amazing progress since we initially began this training; it still obviously needs work.

More Notes From The UK
More Notes From The UK [by Mirat Shah 08] Currently in Cambridge, it is 50 degrees F and not only is the sun shining, the flowers are also blooming. Daffodils have sprung with a vengeance, and yesterday, what I thought was flurries turned out to be apple blossom petals. Last week was Bumps week, which is a huge rowing tournament. Each college has several mens and womens boats participating and there are about 30 colleges, so many, many boats. Boats are staggered along the river and are disqualified if/when the boat behind them catches up to them (bumps them). The first boat across the finish line wins as usual. More on that in my next entry. I promised last entry to comment on academics at Cambridge versus MIT. Note that my account is only applicable to my own department (materials science and metallurgy). I am finding that Cambridge is much more concerned with theory and MIT is more concerned with applications. For example, at Cambridge, you would study crystallization temperature and glass transition point by learning exactly how their graphs are derived, and probably plenty of formulas. At MIT, you would get a more condensed summary of this theory, but then learn that it is the difference between crystallization and glass transition temperatures that allow you to burn information onto a CD. In general, I prefer MITs style because I prefer seeing the bigger picture. However, I am glad to be getting a taste of both because I do now have a more solid theoretical background. In many supervisions, a professor questions you for an hour about what steps you are taking to solve a problem and what equations those steps require or to rationalize a relationship in an equation, and you have to be on your toes. Something I like about the Cambridge system is the lecture course format. Our lecture course is split into modules of 6-12 lectures each, so if you really dont like a subject or professor, at least you dont have to put up with it for very long. Also, it really helps to organize the subject matter. Something I miss about MIT is the lab work. Last year my labs included learning to use many machines and microscopes including a scanning electron microscope and an x-ray diffractometer, characterizing quantum dots, making battery cells, and even testing the results of a Nature article. This year, the lab experience is much lamer. This week, I am learning atomic force microscopy (AFM), which is really cool, but its the only really cool thing Ill get to do all year. As a side note, AFM is incredible because it lets you see individual atoms. My lab partner and I were getting bored waiting for a scan to complete when our supervisor commented that although sometimes its boring, she then thinks Oh wait, Im looking at atoms. Thats amazing! And now, because I couldnt really organize my thoughts, this is a mini photo essay of whats been going on over the past couple of weeks. [] Emmanuel College with snow. A couple weeks ago, it finally snowed! This is the front court of Emmanuel College in snow, with a snowman on our Fellows lawn. Lowly undergrads are not supposed to walk on this lawn. For some reason, this rule gets broken whenever enough snow falls to make a snowman, and no one seems to mind. [] Punting with the Bridge of Sighs in the background. I finally went punting on the River Cam. Punting involves using a gigantic pole to push off of the bottom of the river to propel your boat forward. It is much harder than it looks. According to Great Britain guidebooks, punting along the backs (backs of colleges) at Cambridge is a top England experience. It was pretty fun until I asked to try and a. was terrible (we went in zigzags and then circles), and b. was learning right underneath the Bridge of Sighs (named after the one in Venice). This bridge was full of tourist families, and they were all watching our punt. Some young children were actually pointing, laughing, and commenting that we looked silly. Oh well. And random side note: my friend Rachel is the only person I know in Cambridge with her hair died a crazy color. Things like that definitely happen more often at MIT. [] In the CUR1350 studio I have a show on the Cambridge University radio station, CUR1350. Its called The Eclectics because my co-hosts and I did not know each other until we decided to host a radio show together last term. We get along great now (or know how to fake it with lively on-air banter). No, we really are all friends now. At first, I was disappointed because the record library is much smaller than WMBRs (MIT-Cambridge radio station). However, CUR1350 teaches you a lot more about production, so your show sounds very professional on air. [] An elderly couple taking a picture of Ely Cathedral. Ely is a village town close to Cambridge known for its massive medieval cathedral. We visited it one Saturday, and it was fun wandering around. We ended up at an antique store run by a really gregarious (and probably lonely) elderly lady who was showing us things of interest that we obviously couldnt afford. Most of the things had to do with British history or authors, but then she pointed to an enormous stein with the United States seal of a bald eagle on it and asked us if we recognized the seal. Without thinking, my friend Cassi answered no. It was embarrassing. [] Transporting the dishes home. Also in Ely, I discovered Oxfam, which is officially my favorite store in the UK. I was sad because no one seems to shop at thrift stores in Cambridge, and I miss the Garment District in Cambridge, MA. (The Garment District is an immense thrift/vintage store which is good for finding Halloween costumes and other clothes. Also, they have a Dollar a Pound clothing section which is exactly what it sounds like.) Cassi bought an entire set of dishes (30 pieces or more) for 2.99 and I found an amazing sweater and adorable teacups with pagodas on them. [][] Atop the tower St. Johns tower is the highest vantage point in Cambridge. The spiral staircase is pretty long and claustrophobia inducing. But the view from the top is definitely worth it. Does Partisanship Affect Politics Today - 1158 Words
What May Be the Cause for Dysfunction in Politics As a young child, politics has always been a complicated idea that I could never wrap my mind around. Even knowing nothing whatsoever over politics and the government, I could still see that there was something truly wrong with politics, and as I grew older, I began to understand politics as it itself is in a state of dysfunction. The question at hand here is how and why this dysfunction is occurring in our politics today. For many experts, they have found that it can all be centered on one main topic. Even though many experts have various viewpoints when it comes to politics, many can agree that it is partisanship that is causing dysfunction in politics, however there are also those who believe otherwise. When the word partisanship comes up, our minds can think of numerous things; in this case partisanship with the help of other reasons can explain the dysfunction of the government in the area of politics. To begin, one could ask how exactly does partisanship affect politics today. Jim Douglas does an excellent job of showing how partisanship is affecting our government and why it is important to stop it. He does this in his speech, Beyond Partisanship. Children of Wealth In Your Warm Nursery Free Essays
This poem is a Patriarchal sonnet that consists of two stanzas- the first one is an octet in which the thesis is explained and the second one is a sestet in which a solution for the thesis is explained. The poem is about the children in rich families that are overprotected and lead luxurious and extravagant lives. The comfort that they get isnââ¬â¢t as good for them as it seems but plays a part in making them ignorant and making them unprepared to face whatever calamities that may befall them. We will write a custom essay sample on Children of Wealth In Your Warm Nursery or any similar topic only for you Order Now The poem which has a sober and didactic tone is written in second person narrative so that the message has a greater impact on the reader and the reader feels like heââ¬â¢s been addressed directly. The poem begins with the children of wealth being addressed in their warm and comfy homes directly as in the first line of the poem which is also the title of the poem as in every sonnet. The children are seated in a warm place on ââ¬Å"cushioned windowsâ⬠which tells us that they are provided with so much comfort that even their window seated are cushioned .from the beginning we see that the poet exaggerates their riches. They are watching the snow falling thatââ¬â¢s falling continuously outside sitting from their windows as in the line ââ¬Å"set in the window seat to watch the volleying snow guarded invisiblyâ⬠. There are two images formed here- one is of the comfortable and warm room in which the children are seated and the second image is of the cold and chilly and harsh winter outside. The only barrier between the two is the clear window referred to as an invisible guard because you cant see it. It doesnââ¬â¢t let any pain reach the children as in the line ââ¬Ëby the clear double pane through which no touch untimely penetratesâ⬠. The children donââ¬â¢t know what winter is because they have never felt it, just seen it and heard it. Winter is not something which is known just by seeing .. it has to be felt. In the same way, they [the children] have never experienced the hardships that some people face in this world. They have just heard about them. The pun pane describes the window and tells us that no pain can reach the children. If the window would have been single paned the children would still be able to feel the cold air that would seep in. thus we see that winter and ââ¬Å"coldâ⬠symbolize harsh realities of the outside world. The glass does indeed keep the children away and well protected from the harsh winter but it also keeps them away from the pains of winter and makes them ignorant which can be painful for them. Their citadel keeps them away from feeling and knowledge which is essential for the survival of human beings in the world as in the line ââ¬Å"your citadel is safe from feeling and from knowledge tooâ⬠. In the second stanza the poet says that the only way these kids can get rid of their ignorance is if they are exposed to the harsh realities in the world from which they are kept away. In the line â⬠go down go out to elemental wrongâ⬠, the poet says that these children should be made to go out and seek the worldly problems out and solve them. The children of wealth are visualized as fair and round so the poet tells them to shed their weight by working hard as in the line ââ¬Å"waste you two round limbs , tan your skin too whiteâ⬠. The poet also says that they should tan their skin which is too white that it looks pale and gives a feeling of something thatââ¬â¢s decaying by exposing it to the sun. the word ââ¬Å"tooâ⬠makes it negative. So, the poet is urging them in using a tone with urgency to seek the outside world and face its difficulties so that they may be able to shed their ignorance. The second stanza shows the glass as not only a barrier that provides protection but also a dangerous object that is being identified with ignorance as in the line ââ¬Å"the glass of comfort, ignorance seems strongâ⬠. In the next lines the poet warns them that of a possibility of a fire starting in their houses as in the line ââ¬Å"today and yet perhaps this very night youââ¬â¢ll wake to horrors wrecking fire your home is wired within for this in every room . The word ââ¬Å"yetâ⬠in this line gives an effective warning sound. And if something like that does happen they wont be able to protect themselves and how ever will they escape? Their only way will be out of the window which unfortunately wonââ¬â¢t give way too easily because itââ¬â¢s double paned. In the same way they wonââ¬â¢t be able to survive in the outside world because of their ignorance which is symbolized by glass. The poem ends with a very clear warning to the children of wealth making it clear that unless they donââ¬â¢t seek and expose themselves to reality and experience the difficulties of this world they are going to be vulnerable to this worlds dangers. Unit 3 Assignment 1 Remote Access Control Policy Definition Essay Essay Example
Unit 3 Assignment 1: Remote Access Control Policy Definition Essay Paper Richman Investments has decided to spread out their concern. We have been given their new growing projections of 10. 000 employees in 20 states. with 5. 000 located within the U. S. Richman has besides established eight subdivision offices located throughout the U. S. and has designated Phoenix. AZ being the chief central office. With this scenario. I intend to plan a distant entree control policy for all systems. applications and informations entree within Richman Investments. With so many different manners of Access Control to take from it is my appraisal that by taking merely one theoretical account would non be appropriate for Richman Investments. My recommendation would be a combination of multiple Access Control Models that overlap to supply maximal coverage and overall security. Here are my suggestions for entree controls. Role Based Access Control or RBAC. this will work good with the Non-Discretionary Access Control theoretical account. which will be detailed in the following paragraph. RBAC is defined as puting permissions or allowing entree to a group of people with the same occupation functions or duties. With many different locations along with many different users it is of import to place the different users and different workstations within this web. We will write a custom essay sample on Unit 3 Assignment 1: Remote Access Control Policy Definition Essay specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now We will write a custom essay sample on Unit 3 Assignment 1: Remote Access Control Policy Definition Essay specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer We will write a custom essay sample on Unit 3 Assignment 1: Remote Access Control Policy Definition Essay specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer Every attempt should be dedicated towards forestalling user to entree information they should non hold entree to. Non-Discretionary Access Control is defined as controls that are monitored by a security decision maker. While RBAC identifies those with permissions. it is a security decision maker that should farther place the degree of entree to each Role that is created. The security decision maker should besides denominate certain users or workstations entree to the information available within the web. Rule Based Access Control can besides be linked to the first two theoretical accounts detailed in the paper ( RBAC and Non-Discretionary ) . and is similar to RBAC. Rule Based Access Control is a set of regulations to find which users have entree to what information. Within each Role Based Access Control security can be farther refined by using Rules. These regulations will be defined by the security decision maker as portion of the Non-Discretionary Access Control theoretical account. Constrained User Interface incorporates similar constructs of two other entree control theoretical accounts that have been detailed. Role Base and Rule Base. Constrained User Interface is defined as a userââ¬â¢s ability to acquire into certain resources based on the userââ¬â¢s rights and privileges. These rights and privileges are restricted and constrained on the plus they are trying to entree. While this requires many degrees of protection it provides restrictions on the petition entree to the resources available within the organisation. Another illustration of a entree control theoretical account that can be applied in this state of affairs is known as the Clark and Wilson Integrity Model. This theoretical account provides betterments from the Biba Integrity Model of entree control. Developed by David Clark and David Wilson. the manner concentrates on what happens when a user attempts to make things they are non permitted to make. which was one defect of the Biba Integrity Model. The other defect that was addressed was the theoretical account besides reviews internal unity menaces. There are 3 cardinal elements of the Clark and Wilson unity theoretical account ; the first it stops unauthorised users from doing alterations within the system. The 2nd. it stops authorised users from doing improper alterations. and the 3rd. it maintains consistence both internally and externally. Within the Clark and Wilson model a userââ¬â¢s entree is controlled by permissions. specifically to put to death plans with authorised users holding entree to plans that allow alterations. While some of these theoretical accounts are similar they work best when working with each other. By supplying multiple theoretical accounts of entree controls within the web it will supply a more robust coverage of entree control. It would non be good to use merely one entree control theoretical account as there can be flaws and exposures for a individual entree control manner. Mentions: Kim. D. . A ; Solomon. M. G. ( 2012 ) . Ableism Essays
Ableism Essays Ableism Essay Ableism Essay Each day for approximately six years was a hardship because I was so uncomfortable with myself and what kind of person I displayed myself to be. Living life under such a pressure and fear, I truly did feel disabled, as if I was missing some piece of normality which most people were born with and took advantage of. After several failed counseling sessions with psychologists and psychiatrists, I decided to take control of my own future and force the change that needed to take place In my life. With the Incredible faith of my family and friends, I overcame that feat which caused me to feel a much stronger sense of self and will. Looking back I feel gratified to have gone through such a life-changing ordeal. Although I did feel disabled and weak while in the long process toward recovery, now that Im recovered I feel even stronger than the average person who hasnt gone through a similar experience. A lesson to acknowledge from my experience is that as disabled people may look or feel significantly weak or unable to support a normal lifestyle, they often prove to be stronger mentally and emotionally if they manage to obtain some sort of victory through their plight. Besides the various forms of obsessive-compulsive disorders and varying learning disabilities, my consciousness of babbles Is not terribly significant. I have never had anyone close to me suffer from serious, debilitating physical traumas besides your run-of-the-mill broken bone. At first glance this fact may be thought of as fortunate, however, there is no doubt that if Id ever had a significant other with visible, developmental disabilities my perspective of babbles would be dramatically altered. My housemate Theresa grew up in a home with mentally disabled adults. Theresa is not mentally disabled. Threshers mother devotes her career and home fostering people of lower to higher functioning levels below the average range. Theresa confided in me observations concerning babbles. Her friends and schoolmates would tell Theresa they felt uncomfortable and awkward going to her house because of the mentally disabled adults living in her home. She didnt understand why people had such Issues communicating with the disabled and says, They should Just get over It! Theresa mentioned the mother of one disabled member living In her home ho Is fully dependent on Threshers mom for the full time care of her offspring, excluding finances. I agree with Theresa in that I dont understand why people could feel so estranged Trot ten realties AT dawdles. I nose are real people Adorn walkout ODL t II less most TA for granted. I suppose if one is not open to what life could be like living with physical or mental incapacity then they remain closed and estranged to ever communicating the truth about what babbles means or stands for. Babbles simply focuses on what able people miss and generally dont acknowledge about those with blatant disabilities.

Michelangelo's Statue of David Personal Statement
Michelangelo's Statue of David - Personal Statement Example There was not enough physical power in the city and the citizens were hoping for a power of their minds only. Cunningness and cleverness were two basic means for Firenze citizens to gain power over their enemies. Michelangelo dared to depict a mental power of citizens and to show that a beautiful body can have a cunning mind, which can gain victory over more powerful enemies. The superior enemies could have been fought only through some unusual strategies. Michelangeloââ¬â¢s David was identified with strength and anger. It was unusual for time of the artist to show the dominance of the nation through numerous political connotations, which were evident in the statue. Actually, the main intention of the artist was to create a symbol of power and strength of the citizens. The project of this statue was initiated long ago and Michelangelo implemented his ideas in already existent statue. Numerous artists worked at it. Donatello and Agostino di Duccio were the first ones to work at the statue. di Duccio was responsible for creation of the legs of the statue. Antonio Rossellino continued his ideas, but a final masterpiece was finished and polished by Michelangelo (Lieberman 2001, p. 67). A body of a young man is preparing for the battle with Goliath and it can be seen in his brave appearance. A spirit of intensity can be seen in bulging veins on a hand and his leaning body. It looks like David gets prepared for a serious and a decisive action. There are certain features, which were appropriate for the epoch of Michelangelo. Thus, a position of the contrapposto was relevant to the High Renaissance. He leans on his right leg and hi left leg is relaxed. We can see that a left arm is in motion and his right hand hangs along his body. It is very natural of a person, who is ready for action and is thinking about his further actions. For the contemporaries it is unusual to find that David was on alert and made attempt to attack his enemies. They are more focused on his s erenity and beauty of body lines. What is weird about this statue is that David has unrealistic proportions. The lower parts of the body are smaller than a head and the upper part of the body. Hands of David seem to be very large too. Initially, there was an intention to place this statue high on a church and then parts of the body would have looked accurate. The real king David was circumcised, but the statue is not. This triggers other controversies. Unfortunately, in the modern times a statue was attacked by the vandals and in 1991 some toes of the left foot were damaged. A power of beauty is combined in the works by Michelangelo with a power of expressivity, feelings and a proper balancing (Condivi 1999, p. 57). These features are beyond traditions of Greek classicism. The facial expression was unusual for Greek sculpture and a power of David is found in his restrain and inner ability of self- and energy control. His power is in his serenity. He looks calm and his eyes are fixed on his enemy, but he is not scared at all. The muscles of the forehead reflect his inner emotional tension (Olson 1992, p. 65). We can suppose that he feels anger and frustration. Michelangelo invented a central axis positioning of the statue. For example, the right side reflects serenity, while the left side reflects dynamism and activity. The viewers cannot see both Davidââ¬â¢s eyes. His right eye is focused on Goliath and the left eye stays fixed. Michelangelo played with different artistic

Research In Motion Analysis Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
In Motion Analysis - Research Paper Example Security officials say the inability to monitor BlackBerry traffic undermines efforts to protect national security. RIM has so far said it cannot unscramble data of its enterprise customers because it does not possess the keys needed to do so. After several meetings, RIM proposed it could share the IP address of BlackBerry Enterprise Servers, and the PIN and IMEI numbers of BlackBerry mobiles. India says that is not enough because it doesn't provide access to mails (FACTBOX - Problems BlackBerry services face in India, 2010) The proposed solutions by RIM for solving the security related problems while using blackberry phones in India has not been solved fully yet. RIM is trying to convince the Indian authorities with the help of some simple modifications in its existing technologies rather than going for a complete change. Indian authorities on the other hand are not ready to accept RIMââ¬â¢s offers. It should be noted that other mobile phone companies are ready to obey whatever t he security measures suggested by the Indian authorities and therefore India do not want to accept the offers of RIM. RIM should realize that the necessity to market blackberry pones in India is theirs rather than Indiaââ¬â¢s. No country will sacrifice their security measures for introducing a foreign mobile phone in its territory. ââ¬Å"Research In Motion (RIM) founder Mike Lazaridis ordered a BBC reporter to end an interview after he was asked about his problems with India and Middle Eastern countries over security issuesâ⬠(BlackBerry chief ends BBC interview after India query, 2011). It is evident from the above example that RIM is not ready to accept its mistakes and dealing the issues emotionally rather than... Even though the growth opportunities for Rim are not so good at present, it can still regain its supremacy if concentrate more on changing some of its traditional business concepts. As mentioned earlier, RIM should be ready to modify its technologies to suit the needs of Asian markets, instead of keeping an adamant attitude with respect to technology changes. It should be noted that mobile phone market is facing stiff challenges at present because of the ongoing recession. Asia is the only region which escaped with fewer injuries in this recession period. So, RIM should shift attention more towards Asian market. Google and Apple are some of the companies which are raising stiff challenges to RIM. Apple is currently the second biggest and most valuable technology company in the world and therefore their products are always accepted with both hands by the customers. The case of Google is also not an exception. ââ¬Å"Cheaper Google phones are making inroads in Latin America, Asia and E urope, threatening the popularity of Black-Berry models such as the Curveâ⬠. In short, RIM needs a revolutionary product now to compete effectively with the products of competitors. It should be noted that Apple grabbed the smartphone market because of their innovative iPhone series products. iPhone 5 is about to enter the global markets. Same way, Samsung is going to introduce the 3d version of its revolutionary Galaxy S2 product series.

Is multicultural-nationalism possible?
Is multicultural-nationalism possible? Introduction: Nations- states used to be the premier and most important form of human gathering, where this implies that this entity does have the necessary requirements of existence as a state such as (people, territory, sovereignty, etc) along with having just one nation within its territorial borders. This was later changed due to the influx of immigration all over the world where immigrants move between countries either because of wars or seeking employment and better economic conditions or any other necessitating reason. This phenomenon led to the situation we are facing recently that almost all states now are culturally or religiously or ethnically diverse. Popper states this in such a criticizing way, Principle of the national state is not only inapplicableâ⬠¦it is a mythâ⬠¦and utopian dreamâ⬠¦. So, having multinational states became a fact that we have to deal with. The coinciding between the states borders and the inclusion of a nation is no longer the only form of countries. There are even cases when there are stateless nations. This made Connor observes that now we can almost find only seven nation-states remaining, he named them: the Netherlands, Denmark, Portugal, Japan, Luxembourg, Iceland and Norway. To be able to deal with such multinational states, we need to understand what both (multiculturalism and nationalism) mean. This will help us answer the main question of the paper; whether multicultural nationalism is applicable or not? Nationalism and multiculturalism: Nationalism is deeply related to nations, being the social phenomenon that refers to the unique relation between individuals and their homeland. Citizens identify with their nation through the commonalities they share (history, values, myths, identity, language, customs â⬠¦etc). A central aspect of nationalism is that the individuals identity is being formulated through their membership to their society. Nationalism has different forms where Sweeney identifies four types: The Civic Nationalism which is a desirable form of nationalism since it focuses on the civic values that unites the citizens, it stresses on both the territorial and cultural bonds and thus manages to recognize the various ethnic communities. The Ethnic Nationalism whose focal point is the common descent. The State Nationalism which calls for the superiority and the dominance of the ethnicity of the majority and finally Multicultural Nationalism which is a new phenomenon arising form the era of globalization we are living in and the high degree of interdependence that we witness all over the globe. Usually, both (civic and state nationalisms) are referred to as top-down nationalism being directed by the state institutions, unlike the (ethnic nationalism) which depends upon the public, arising from the bottom to up. From Sweeneys famous typology, we can see how both the ethnic and state nationalisms are traditional forms of nationalism , unlike the other two types which are more modern and also similar in some aspects. Brown defines multicultural nationalism as, a vision of community which respects and promotes the cultural economy and status equality of its component ethnic group. This means it goes beyond the mere civic tolerance towards the different communities within the society, rather it respects them and is interested in such diversity. That is why I consider it wider than the civic nationalism since it encompasses it all; recognition of diversity, tolerance, respect and interest in promoting such diversity through different governmental and societal mechanisms. Generally, Nationalism is perceived as a positive movement which is needed to strengthen the loyalty of nationals towards their country, uniting them to fulfil the national interests. But with the rise of multinational states, whether due to the existence of minorities, immigrants or indigenous groups, this claim is being questioned. Nationalism is no longer merely perceived as a positive force, rather now it is a double sided force. Through observing history we notice how sometimes violent banal nationalist movements lead to bloody wars and confrontations between different national groups especially when each of them is promoting their nationalism or if there is a minority which is calling for self independence. This can be seen clearly in what used to happen between the Scottish and the British in the United Kingdom. Thus, a rationalization of nationalist sentiments is what is needed nowadays to strike a balance between the new phenomenon of multinational states. On the other side, Multiculturalism is not only a phenomenon; it is considered as both a descriptive demographic term to describe the existence of culturally different groups within a certain society; It refers to this feature of having multiple cultural and/or ethnic and/or religious backgrounds between the citizens, and it is also seen as a political concept to refer to the public policies adopted by a specific government to deal with the cultural diversity within its society where it calls for mutual respect and tolerance and acceptance for the diversity. As a public policy, multiculturalism first emerged in Canada to solve the problem between the French and the English divisions. Parekh succinctly describes what multiculturalism means in this quote; ââ¬Å"Multiculturalism doesnt simply mean numerical plurality of different cultures, but rather a community which is creating, guaranteeing, encouraging spaces within which different communities are able to grow at their pace. At the same time it means creating a public space in which these communities are able to interact, enrich the existing culture and create a new consensual culture in which they recognize reflections of their own identityâ⬠Like nationalism, multiculturalism also has different types. Grillo distinguishes between two kinds: the weak multiculturalism and strong multiculturalism where the former exists when multiculturalism only prevails in the private sphere while in the public sphere all citizens are required to fully assimilate and get absorbed within the majoritarian culture and values forgetting about their own culture ,while the latter exits when cultural diversity is recognized both in the public and private spheres, allowing the immigrants and minorities to preserve their national identity while integrating with the whole society. Multiculturalism is considered an inescapable situation we have to deal with, bearing in mind that huge efforts should be exerted by the state and the wider society to ensure that the diversity within any one society leads to unity and exchange of benefits between cultures, rather than disintegration and ghettoization. From this, we can see how both nationalism and multiculturalism are desirable phenomena on condition that their limitations are avoided, promoting only their positive side. Is Multicultural Nationalism possible? An important question rises about whether nationalism can be multicultural or not? Can they both coexist together? Kernerman highlights that the main objective of multicultural nationalism is striking a balance between both the diversity and the unity of the state, so that state is able to preserve its national sentiments and identity while at the same time promoting diversity and multiculturalism. He believes that the main question to answer is; how are the various manifestations of diversity to be recognized and understood in relation to one another and to the political community? It is important to notice that we will focus in here on the multicultural state nationalism which tackles the way of dealing with the immigrants, accommodating them within the society while preserving the states original national identity. But, it is important to mention that on the other hand there is the multicultural sub- state nationalism which is concerned with the sub state nationalisms within countries. But, it is not the focus of this paper. To understand how multicultural state nationalism exists, it is important to examine the states response and its policies regarding immigrants and the relation between those immigrants and the society as a whole to discover the possibility of having strong common feelings uniting all the citizens no matter where they originally come from. Can a multicultural society achieve both integration of immigrants while achieving national unity and cohesion? The paradox of multicultural societies: Nationalism vs. Multiculturalism? A debatable issue always takes place in multicultural societies and that is how to achieve the states national unity? Some suggest equal treatment for all citizens regardless of their origin; religion or ethnicity and that citizenship should be difference blind, while others believe this is illogical, calling for the recognition of differences and even going further calling for the adoption of policies that reflect these differences. This second approach believes that this will be more integrative to immigrants fostering their sense of loyalty and belonging to the society. Due to this endless debate, we find that immigrants and minorities issues are gaining attention in states policies and debates, issues such as (minorities rights, immigrants representation, collective rights, states loyaltyâ⬠¦etc). This increases the role of the state especially that such issues can not be left to the different communities within the society to resolve especially when each one of them will be aiming at deepening their national identity more than the others identities. This will lead to disunity and absence of common loyalty. That is why the state should be the main actor in the creation of a common identity that bonds all the citizens including the immigrants. This identity should be as inclusive as possible focusing more on civic symbols and signifiers rather than cultural and ethnic ones. Different states differ in the way they fulfil this role depending upon their histories, their legal frameworks, their national interestsâ⬠¦etc. But, all states should ai m at ensuring that its national identity is preserved and not threatened by immigrants, rather is being inclusive for them. Parekh highlights an important equation that is needed to achieve this: ââ¬Å"If immigrants are to make an emotional commitment to society, the latters view of its national identity needs to be inclusive and hospitable enough for them to identify with it. Its self understanding should take full account of their presence; its view of its history should include the story of their arrival, settlement and contributions; its official symbols should symbolize them as well, and not be allowed to become the monopoly of a section of it; its national events should recognize their presence and contributions and not become occasions to display the solidarity of the rest of society against themâ⬠. One of the best ways to achieve such equation is through the creation of a sense of common belonging between citizens. Such a process is double sided; it requires the efforts of both the immigrants from one side and the state along with the wider society form another side. Both should aim at fulfilling its duties so that its rights can be met by the other side. This is even formulated as one of the EU common basic principles of immigrants integration policy as follows: Integration is a dynamic, two-way process of mutual accommodation by all immigrants and residents of the Member States On the immigrants side, They do have the right to ask for certain claims from the government and even modifications within the polices of the governmental institutions so as to help them better integrate in the society but it is necessary for them to fulfill their obligations as citizens, being the only way they can secure that their rights will be met by the state. Since immigrants settled willingly in the host society, they are expected to be loyal and to abide by the laws and rules of this society, especially that it is the rights of the nationals to act upon the preservation of their own society where they lived their whole lives, offering sacrifices for maintaining its well being. Consequently, immigrants must prove they are loyal to the society, showing all signs of good faith. This comes in different forms; (respecting the constitution and laws, being productive workers to add economic value, interacting socially and politically with the wider societyâ⬠¦etc). This will make the immigrants an inseparable necessary component within the host society being active loyal citizens. But still this does not require them breaking ties with their original homelands, but they just are expected to be committed to the well being of the host society. In return to this, the immigrants can claim some cultural rights from the host society, such as: Asking to be excluded from some laws that may be hindering some of their religious practices. The state needs to take such claims into consideration because it will show how the state respects the immigrants cultures even if their practices are differently perceived from the majority but still as long as they are not harmful for the wider society, they should be allowed to practice them. Calling for assistance to pursue some activities which help them get integrated within the society. Such as helping them acquire the cultural competence needed to adapt with the society (offering language classes, teaching them the societal life style, having publications about the societys traditions, customs and historyâ⬠¦). Also, sometimes this assistance is needed to overcome disadvantages that prevent the immigrants from practicing some of their rights or daily life practices, either because they are discriminated against and in this case the state is required to fight this racism or because these practices or activities were designed in a way that only fits the majority without considering others. Immigrants can ask to be properly represented in the states institutions and governmental bodies so as to have voices that call for their rights and needs and to allocate them their shares of the public resources. Such a mechanism also helps greatly in fighting discrimination. Thos representatives can ask for some symbolic representation to the minorities such as national holiday or official name for the minorityâ⬠¦etc. The state and the wider society on the other hand should be meeting the other side of the equation by helping the immigrants to integrate, taking all the measures that can help in this. From observation, we can notice that the states integration policies differed over time due to some changes that took place such as: The influx in immigration especially that the old assumption that their number will decreases or that they will dissolve in the society did not happen, on the contrary they are increasing steadily compared to the western societies birth rates, especially that these societies are facing an ageing problem. The increase in the immigrants consciousness about their rights due to the increase in the human rights organizations along with the democratic movements that make equality and justice basic priorities that can not be negotiated. Thus, this encourages minorities to have representatives calling for their needs and rights. Such changes increased the necessity to respect the minorities and immigrants rights and it added a burden over the states to meet their role in integrating the immigrants within their societies. Consequently, from the states side, there must be a commitment to help the immigrants integrate getting over any disadvantages they have (lack of knowledge about host society, being stereotypedâ⬠¦). The state needs to work on different levels to fulfill this role: The state needs to address the exclusion problems that face the immigrants who get discriminated against in many spheres of life especially economically and socially .The state must set penalties on discriminatory acts against immigrants being illegal, this will increase the immigrants loyalty to the state, being just to them, looking after their rights. But, if the state did not respond to discrimination taking place, the immigrants will feel inferior and more alienated which make them easily attracted by terrorist organizations. The state needs to adopt policies that help the immigrants get over any disadvantages they face due to their transitional positions as we stated earlier (language classes, citizenship classes, equal employment opportunitiesâ⬠¦etc).Such policies may be accused of being discriminatory, but actually they are not since the immigrants are usually the least advantaged category in any society. The state also shall make changes to the educational system so as to be more multicultural. This will help in creating attachments and a sense of belonging between the students and the citizens afterwards by fostering values such as tolerance, mutual respect and understanding, respect for diversityetc. These values are necessary in such multinational societies as it ensures that each community preserves its national culture and identity but still all communities will be sharing one common civic identity that tighten the relations between them for the good of the society. This shall be leading to active citizens who are both responsible and productive. Such multicultural education will be teaching the students about the relationship with The other. this learning process will enhance their critical thinking about themselves and the immigrants. They may include histories about how these minorities contributed to the host society or mentioning their major historical events and national h olidays. All this shall be implemented in a multicultural educational atmosphere where the administrators and teachers are all committed to promoting diversity and protecting the cultures of the students while fostering a common sense of identity. Also, the civil society does play a role in bringing together different communities together in shared activities and interests to increase their sense of having a civic common identity which transcends the ethnic and national differences, while everyone is still retaining its own national identity and culture. How to make these efforts work together while avoiding the critics stated against them? These are the efforts and roles that need to be pursued by the state, the immigrants and the civil society. Cooperating together to ensure the preservation of a common sense of identity along with the preservation of each ones national culture and identity, helps greatly in the success of the integration of the immigrants within the host society easily and quickly. It makes them integrated without being alienated or discriminated against. We find at the end by looking at different multicultural societies how all the communities are cooperating together having many shred interests and feeling a common sense of loyalty to the society, while at the same time they all feel both equal and different. This is the equation that need to be maintained; to assure that the national identity of the state (of the host society) is preserved while being inclusive to other different national communities through an over arching civic identity. These efforts sometimes are criticized by being discriminatory to nationals in favor of immigrants as stated earlier- but it is not, it just an engine for affirmative actions since the disadvantages faced by immigrants are much more than other citizens face. Also, some analysts think that such efforts are repressive imposing obligatory civic integration from above on the whole society. To avoid this we must ensure that the process of integration is smoothly undertaken , ensuring the help of all sectors of the society (civil society, citizens, local association, the government, the immigrantsâ⬠¦etc) to assure the shared willingness of all to be one common whole, facing any disadvantages that may arise to achieve the common good for the whole state and the wider host society without threatening anyones culture or national identity, rather being more inclusive and more understandable to all differences while maintaining one common civic ground. An important mechanism that can be a safe guard that integration is not imposed rather is a natural flow of interaction between the different communities is through encouraging dialogues between these communities with their different cultural backgrounds both through their representatives and between normal citizens as well. This dialogue it will help them understands one another culture and creating more common grounds between them. On the other hand, it will be asserting every ones loyalty to his/her own national identity through critical analysis and constructive self criticisms. Such actions shall be ensuring on the long run that both the differences are understandably respected and that the states national identity is protected and even enriched through dialogue. Others believe that on the contrary, the states now are less willing to accept/ integrate immigrants rather they count on their immigration policies as a mechanism to lessen immigrants entrance. But this is exaggerating, where although it is true that some countries have every strict immigration policies but still others are moderate. Countries in general tend to refine the immigrants accepted to entry to ensure the success of its integration policies according to its societal framework. Such immigration policies try to make sure that immigrants will be an added value to the society not an economic burden and that they are willing to commit to be good citizens to ensure a peaceful multicultural society that both preserves it identity while respecting its diversity. But still an important basic rule should be taken into consideration, immigration policies ought to be seeking the national interests of the state as a priority and in applying such a vision, it can not be accused of intol erance or discrimination against prospective citizens as long as it is logical in its requirements and limits. By avoiding these limitations and consolidating all parties efforts, multiculturalism and state nationalism will be coexisting peacefully. Conclusion: As Brown believes that when a country adopts the ideology of a multicultural nationalism it means; the nation is viewed as a community bound by a commitment to the values of ethnic diversity and inter-ethnic equity An authentic multicultural state nationalism can flourish when both diversity and state national identity are being promoted and respected. Multicultural governance can achieve that with its focus on having a strong active citizenship along with a respected multicultural societal framework. Such multicultural authority not only protects diversity found within the society, rather it also works on flourishing it. In this way the citizens -including immigrants- can belong to the nation state as a whole while at the same time keeping their attachment to their cultural or ethnic community. Multicultural governance, with the different state policies that aim at integrating the immigrants and with the efforts of both the private and civil associations along with the commitment of the immigrants to be loyal integrated citizens, creates a society where cultural freedoms are protected and national state identity is also asserted. The state needs to put in mind while doing her national policie s that immigrants are citizens in training who need all the help and support to lead a good life in the host society where they can be active loyal citizens. It should be noticed by now how multiculturalism neither negates nor avoids nationalism rather it just implies a society with various internal micro nationalisms. That is why they can work together as long as the efforts undertaken are genuine seeking the creation of spaces where various cultures are respected without weakening the states national identity. Since multiculturalism goes beyond tolerance towards recognition of others, it entails the reassertion of all identities and cultures involved in such an interaction.

Existentialism Is a Humanism Essay
Sartre is trying to defend existentialism against some disapproval to it. The Communist criticized existentialism as an invitation to people to take interest in hopeless world affairs. On the other hand, Christians reproached from the fact that people deny the need of attention in human affairs. People have the will to do anything they want and wish. With the example given, about ignoring the Ten Commandments, we can people deny the value of following the commandments and will only follow it if they wish. THE MEANING OF EXISTENTIALISM. According to Sartre, existentialism is a principle that provides human life possible. It also determines that every truth and action we know involves both an environmental and a human subjectivity. The two types of existentialist are the Christians and Existential Atheists. What they have in common is that they both believe in ââ¬Å"existence comes before essenceâ⬠, which means that a human has no predetermined essence or nature. ââ¬Å"Man is nothing else but that which he makes of himself. â⬠If a man cannot define himself, then he is bound to happen that he is nothing. The paper-knife example talks about how an artisan conceptualized an object, how he paid close attention to it and knew what the purpose of the object would be. The paper-knife is existentially different from human because for Existential Atheists, which Sartre is included, man defines himself and not the creator that conceived him. RESPONSIBILITY An implication given in the lecture is how a being would be able to existence would come before its essence even if God does not exist. Sartre mentioned that there is no human nature because we define ourselves and not by any force that lives inside us. By Sartre saying that ââ¬Å"in choosing for himself, he chooses for all menâ⬠, he means that when humans make decisions, it affirms that value of which he had chosen. The choices we consider are always the better, and nothing can be better for us unless it is better for all. When a human chooses to do something for himself, like marrying and have children, he is still creating and contributing an image for the whole the whole mankind. ANGUISH Existentialist frankly state that man is in anguish because he only decides for himself, not realizing that the whole mankind is resting upon his shoulders. When we are in verge of act, we should ask ourselves ââ¬Å"What would happen if everyone did so? â⬠In asking this, we would be able to fully re-evaluate the actions or decisions weââ¬â¢re about to do. In the story of Abraham and the hallucinating women, we are taught on how to ask ourselves with that question. It is not enough to do an act with merely hearing the command. We should prove to ourselves that what we are about to follow would be reasonable and just. ABANDONMENT Sartre said that if God did not to exist, nothing would really change. He believed that we would still have the same progress that we have now. But for the existentialist, they would be embarrassed because it disappears with God the possibility of finding values in an intelligible heaven. For Dostoevksy, if God did not exist, everything will be permitted. He said that human would be free from doing anything they wish. One will be never to be able to explain oneââ¬â¢s action because he doesnââ¬â¢t have anything to refer to. On the other hand, he proposes that if God does not exist there wouldnââ¬â¢t be values or commands that will legitimize our behavior. Existentialists believe in the power of passion. They believe that man is responsible for his passion, not some drive that is hidden inside a man. The story of the student teaches us that we should trust our instinct. With his dilemma, whether to join the Forces or to stay with him mom, he based his decision on what he felt. Because he had been living with his mother, the value of feeling to be always by her side is developed. Thus, he chose not to live his mother. In addition, the Jesuitââ¬â¢s story tells us that through our decisions and action, we are bound to choose our own path and bear the entire responsibility. DESPAIR According to Sartre, the definition of despair is that ââ¬Å"we limit ourselves to a reliance upon which is within our will, or within the sum of the probabilities which render our action feasible. â⬠I think the reason why Sartre thought that when Descartes said, ââ¬Å"Conquer yourself rather than the world,â⬠what he meant was ââ¬Å"we should act without hopeâ⬠is because both statements are saying that we should be in control of ourselves. The Marxists believe that you can rely upon the help of others. That even when you die, other will still continue what you did and help. While Sartreââ¬â¢s argument is that he cannot fully trust those people he doesnââ¬â¢t know. Yes, he can entrust his works and life with his comrades and family, but not to strangers. Does that mean that I should abandon myself to quietism? NO. What we should do is to commit ourselves then act the commitment made. Sartre stated that man is nothing else than what he proposes. Because he hasnââ¬â¢t found anything yet he seeks, he continues to living until the day he found it. ââ¬Å"You are nothing else but what you liveâ⬠, this means that ââ¬Å"a man is no other than a series of undertaking, that he is the sum, the organization, the set of relations that constitute these undertaking. â⬠Behaviors of the people are caused by the actions happening in their environment upon them. The implication given was how a coward became a coward, and a hero became a hero. Being a coward is the act of giving up. How sternness of optimism here is seen on how a man can make himself a coward or hero, through his action and thinking. In the end, what counts is that ââ¬Å"the destiny of man is placed within himself. â⬠There wouldnââ¬â¢t be any hope or changes unless he starts doing something. SUBJECTIVITY What Sartre and Descartes both agree on is that truth must first have an absolute truth. If not, it will crumble into nothing. Sartre thinks that the theory alone is incompatible with the dignity of man because ââ¬Å"it is the only one which does not make man into an object. â⬠Their main aim of that view is to distinguish the human kingdom as pattern of values to that of the material world. THE OTHER Sartre believes that when we are trying to think to discover ourselves, we are to discover everything from others. To recognize oneself is to be recognize by other people. With ââ¬Å"I cannot obtain any truth whatsoever about myself, except through the mediation of anotherâ⬠, Sartre is saying that we need other to seek the truth that we are trying to find. That being an individual is not enough to find the truth and identity. INTER-SUBJECTIVITY We should understand that ââ¬Å"all the limitations which a priori define manââ¬â¢s fundamental situation in the universe. â⬠The historical situation of every man is different from what they experienced. Human condition is saying that from having freedom, we are also entitled to take full responsibility of it. I think it is possible to understand and value something about all people because there is still universality, which mean that in somehow we can still understand things outside ourselves. BAD FAITH One of the implications are ââ¬Å"every man realizes himself in realizing a type of humanityâ⬠, meaning that if a man decides to classify himself, he would be able to realizes himself. There is no difference between free being and absolute being. Lying to yourself by saying that it doesnââ¬â¢t matter to you is a bad faith. It is wrong to say that what you choose doesnââ¬â¢t matter to you. People can always choose, but in not choosing is still a choice. ââ¬Å"â⬠¦without reference to any pre-established value, but it is unjust to tax him with caprice. â⬠I do agree what he is trying to say here. Because he has no knowledge of a pre-established value, there is no sudden change in his choice. When Sartre that we make ourselves, what he meant is that through our actions and decisions we are forming our identity. FREEDOM In saying ââ¬Å"You are unable to judge othersâ⬠, it is true in one sense and false in the other. Whenever a man chooses his decisions and purpose, it is now impossible to choose another one. It is true in the sense that we do not believe in progress. The goal of freedom is to judge the logical value and not a judgment of value. They also search for the real meaning of freedom. How can the existentialists form judgment? By saying that he deceives himself and by doing that you are having good faith. ââ¬Å"One can choose anything, but only if it is upon the plane of free commitment. â⬠With this, we can conclude that selecting choices involving the commitment of oneself. INVENTION OF VALUES His response is an analogy, ââ¬Å"if I have excluded God the Father, there must be somebody to invent values. â⬠He disagrees on the kind of humanism that takes man as an end. He says so because man is still to be determined and should be considered as an end. What he meant by ââ¬Å"Transcendenceâ⬠is a manââ¬â¢s relation to his world and that of the people around him. Because man wants to surpass what he has done, he is in the center of his transcendence. A man can realize himself as truly human when he decides for himself, always seek truth and beyond himself and having an aim of some particular realization. CONCLUSION From his point of view, even if God did not exist, it would make no difference. Because for existentialists the real problem is how man will be able to find himself to in order to save himself, by not giving full reliance of Godââ¬â¢s existence. Existentialism is a doctrine of action in a way that they confine their own despair with existentialists that Christians can describe them as without hope.
